20mph limits: The Devil Might be in the Detail2.09.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 17th Jul 2008
Liberal Democrats have said they are pleased with the report to Cabinet on 20mph speed limits being introduced in Oxford City. This follows their motion calling for 20mph limits in Oxford at Council on 17th June. Opposition Transport spokesperson, Roz Smith, hopes this is an end to piecemeal 20mph limits. "What we need now is detailed and full consultation with local residents and businesses about where these limits should go, and possibly the times of day they should operate. Some roads we might all agree should not be changed, for example the Marston Ferry Link Road. I think this road is well-designed, relatively recently, with a separate pedestrian and cycle way. "The benefits of 20mph are well known: increased cycling, increased walking and a better street environment for all, including cars and cats! "However, we must consider our historic and beautiful City and conservation areas when designing the signs and keep their clutter to a minimum. Painted signs on the roads, for example, are less obtrusive than signs on poles and I urge the Conservative Cabinet Member to consider this. Detail is important."
