Local members speak out for school provision in Grove

The two County Councillors for Grove and Wantage spoke at yesterday's meeting of Oxfordshire County Council's cabinet on the future of secondary schooling in the Grove and Wantage area. With the prospect of increased housing development on the horizon, as well as the recent proposals by King Alfred's School in Wantage to become Foundation status, there is concern about the future of secondary education for pupils in the surrounding area.

Cllr Zoe Patrick told the Cabinet, "When Grove was proposed as a strategic development site for housing, we were assured that this would be an opportunity to gain the infrastructure we have been lacking. I have real concerns that we could potentially have all the housing, but still not have the secondary school and all the community facilities this would bring. I urge the Cabinet to take a strategic approach to planning secondary schooling for our area."

Cllr Jim Moley said, "I urge a consultation by an inclusive MORI type poll to gather balanced opinions on this hugely strategic issue. The Council proposes 4000 new houses for Grove/Wantage. Education provision has to be decided in that context."
